Background of the Institute

As envisioned in the National Policy on Education (NPE) 1986, District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) were established across the country in a phased manner to strengthen the quality of elementary education and teacher training at the grassroots level.

In Nagaland, the first DIET was established at Kohima (Chiechama) in 1989 and became operational in 1993. Subsequently, two more DIETs—one at Mokokchung and the other at Tuensang—were established in May 1998 and became fully operational by 1999.

These institutes were set up by the Government of Nagaland with central assistance, through the upgradation of the former Junior Teachers’ Training Institutes (JTTIs).

The District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Tuensang was formally inaugurated on 4th May 1998 by Late Shri H. Chuba Chang, former Minister of Education, Nagaland. Since its inception, DIET Tuensang has been committed to enhancing the quality of school education in the district by providing pre-service teacher education, academic support, and capacity-building programs, contributing significantly to the professional development of teachers and the overall improvement of elementary education.

Location

DIET, Tuensang is located in the old medical ‘A’ colony in the heart of Tuensang town. Tuensang district lies in the eastern part of Nagaland about 267 km from the state capital Kohima.
